We actually built a Domino database that has some java agents in it that takes the google request and magically converts the image to bmp, gif, or jpg. It works exactly the same way as the google api except the google maps url that we generate points to our domino server. The agent then takes the google api parameters an sends a request to google, gets the png, converts it to the requested format and wammo! We have done the same thing re the Pass-Thru HTML.

Sounds like you way may have been easier but it is really awesome being able to use the maps api.

Cheers

Adam.

Comment From Peter Herrmann

Adam - The magic undocumented incantation for Google Chart API to generate GIFs is "chof=gif". However, I do know several corporate environments where the standard is still 800*600 - mostly because of older monitors which still float around. Ideally you want to use the full width of an A4 page and have important stuff on first page. I am using extensive use of different formatting when the document is in Read and Print mode. Obviously for usability fields need to be spread out a little more in edit mode than they should be in Read/Print.

An example would be Title, First Name, Middle Name, Surname fields. In edit mode they would all be separate but in read mode they would just be joined together. Makes it much easier to read and also saves screen real estate for when in Read mode to have a more visually appealing interface.

Comment From Sean Burgess

I have to agree with the use of 1024 x 768 for most design, but I find that I have to keep printing in mind when I designing it. I think you are right. I have done a bit of reading on the topic now and most appear to be at 1024*768 probably because of the laptops and LCD screen support. It does present an interesting challenge when designing complex Notes Forms for instance that have lots of information. I like the idea of users not having to scroll or at the very least the most important/commonly used information should be available on the first page/screen.

The other point to consider is the fact that you can't gaurantee that users will have Notes or whatever application at the full screen resolution. Nowadays with larger screens users tend to have a number of applications open at once that arn't necessarily at full resolution.

So I guess the decision is to built for the average but in a smart way that won't negatively impact the user experience for those that have lower resolutions or screen space allocated to the app.

Comment From Steve Richards

hi, I think many laptops still have a max res of 1024*768 so I don't think anything greater than that could be considered as a reasonable minimum, however I think it would be reasonable to assume that a good proportion of your users have around 1280*1024 but not any higher because higher resolutions on a LCD panel tend to still be pretty expensive.

Comment From Chris Miller

The NOMAD install is different from the standard Notes one and you implement some alternate flags on the setup portion.

While you can always put nsf files on a USB key and access them, the part of having a registry independent code set on the USB is a little different. Lotus Notes Hannover based on Eclipse and will be extensible. As to what extent I really don't know. I think it will have product extension points where 3rd party developers can add plugins etc. Being based on Eclipse is a very good strategic move on IBM's behalf. By making Notes extensible, like you say, will create a whole new ball game for Domio Developers.

The other part that is exciting is the ability to have composite applications. This comes out of the idea of portals linking various applications together at the screen level with portlets interacting with each other even though the actual applications behind the portlets are separate systems. This capability at having a composite application is meant to be part of Hannover. So your traditional Notes app might leverage of some other application.

Comment From Sean Burgess

While I love the new things in Sametime 7.5, the question I have is will the Eclipse based Hannover have the same extensibility?
