PermaLink Screen Resolutions? What size fits most07/30/2006 03:13 PM

Just a question for everyone. I am in the  process of redesigning the layout of our standard look and feel for most of our Lotus Notes applications. What resolution do you think can be accepted as the normal? We used to design for 800x600 but I think that going up to 1024x1280 is probably reasonable nowadays. However I would probably like to go to a higher resolution again but that might be pushing it. Anyway if you have any thoughts on what should be the average resolution I would appreciate it.

hi, I think many laptops still have a max res of 1024*768 so I don't think anything greater than that could be considered as a reasonable minimum, however I think it would be reasonable to assume that a good proportion of your users have around 1280*1024 but not any higher because higher resolutions on a LCD panel tend to still be pretty expensive.

G'day Steve. I think you are right. I have done a bit of reading on the topic now and most appear to be at 1024*768 probably because of the laptops and LCD screen support. It does present an interesting challenge when designing complex Notes Forms for instance that have lots of information. I like the idea of users not having to scroll or at the very least the most important/commonly used information should be available on the first page/screen.

The other point to consider is the fact that you can't gaurantee that users will have Notes or whatever application at the full screen resolution. Nowadays with larger screens users tend to have a number of applications open at once that arn't necessarily at full resolution.

So I guess the decision is to built for the average but in a smart way that won't negatively impact the user experience for those that have lower resolutions or screen space allocated to the app.

I have to agree with the use of 1024 x 768 for most design, but I find that I have to keep printing in mind when I designing it. This is especially true in Notes, where you can't do sizing based on percentages for tables.

G'Day Sean, Yes printing is a consideration that is easily forgotten. Ideally you want to use the full width of an A4 page and have important stuff on first page. I am using extensive use of different formatting when the document is in Read and Print mode. Obviously for usability fields need to be spread out a little more in edit mode than they should be in Read/Print.

An example would be Title, First Name, Middle Name, Surname fields. In edit mode they would all be separate but in read mode they would just be joined together. Makes it much easier to read and also saves screen real estate for when in Read mode to have a more visually appealing interface.

Hi - I would agree with a standard 1024*768 setting - this seems to have been ok since Notes 6 (when the mail file is designed for this setting). However, I do know several corporate environments where the standard is still 800*600 - mostly because of older monitors which still float around. So, I think it's safe to expect 1024*768, but any client specific work should still have this verified.

Hi Brown,
I was facing the problem as i have hard-coded the values for 1024*768. But my client was having the problem of some extra spaces as he was using 1152x864. I resolved the problem now so thought of sharing with this community. (During my search, i found this webpage)

Create a table (html table or notes table) and give it an id (eg. tblMain) then in the onLoad of the form, you can write a single line

document.getElementById('tblMain').width=screen.width;

if you want 75% of the screen you could also write as
document.getElementById('tblMain').width=screen.width*0.75;

This will work for any resolution.

Thanks
Mervin
