There is a lot to this release for both administrators and developers. The Domino server team has been working on the operational cost-related enhancements in Domino 8.5 for two years, resulting in core engine improvements in I/O and compression, the Domino Configuration Tuner, the Domino Attachment and Object Store (DAOS), Notes ID vault, Quality of Service, and other areas. Domino 8.5 also includes the first updates for Domino as a web application server in many years, including the new xPages design constructs, a new look-and-feel for Domino applications (much more usable), and an updated discussion template as a proof point. Domino Designer is being delivered on the Eclipse.org framework (same basis for Notes 8 and Sametime 7.5+), though some of the key objectives of this work will bake in post-8.5 releases (timing being discussed internally with a real sense of urgency). Notes/Domino 8.5 also features updates on the client side, including a long list of incremental improvements to the Notes 8 client, the first Notes 8 version for the Macintosh, and rebranding of Domino Web Access back to iNotes (with some new feaures/support).
